Kick Off Close Out

Some postcard action happened this weekend. Setting up some methods that I'm taking over to a few different paintings to round out this season.

I have one show coming up quick that I'm putting work in which I need to knock out. I haven't listed it on the homepage yet either, but it's a silly little show about summer vacation at MINT Gallery here in town. Guess I should refresh myself with the theme since I'm building the piece (whatever it may be) this weekend. So lets see it's actually called - "What I Did On My Summer Vacation...". Fun little group show vibe... so I'll have to make something that is rather electric I suppose. Something about summer vacation huh... well lets see... what did I do? Well, I drank and goofed off for the most part. This is gonna be tuff.

Operation Out Of

Busy working on a few fresh sets of cards. Doing my recycled materials postcards for a number of these. There are some coming up that I'm creating with oil painted portraits different people and another set with some colored pencil portraits. Trying to make sure and take a little more time with my old school techniques on some of these this round.
Figured out what to do with a large amount of rejected drawings I've done. These (3) were from 2004. Just fold them in half. Glue together. and cut a postcard out of it. WHAM! Instant two-sided postcard. I like this method of working a lot. The drawing all had small areas that were interesting but as a whole the entire composition did not gel. By forcing the piece to be folded in half and then giving oneself a limited amount of space in which to select/crop/cut the postcard shape you accomplish two things:

1. You allow for the "small area" to take on more power by splitting the composition space surrounding it by less than half the original composition. A smaller more focused composition is thus generated.

2. You create 2 like, but broken sides that tend to already play with each other back and forth without having to create 1 side and then the other. In short... you are creating both the front and the back of the postcard in one process.

Bagged Wizard

Flying on an airplane today — hope nothing blows up. I've always considered the fact I have an Apple laptop with me when I fly handy. I've imagined someone trying to hijack the plane and me coming up from behind and cracking them in the head with it or defleting a knife with it and beating the hijacker in the face with it. Then I'd be on CNN or FOX and I'd be interviewed and the headline would read 'Man Thwarts Hijacking with Apple Laptop'... I'd make sure they put Apple too. See the logic to all of this is thus — Apple would get such great publicity that they'd want to replace my laptop. Hell hook me up with a great new sytem. Steve Jobs would come meet me and say, "Thanks Tom." Wow... now that would alright.

Had to give my postcards to the bartender at the airport because — 1. the postoffice box was ouside of security gate — 2. I didn't mail anything all week (ohh well). Just hope the bartender doesn't forget to mail them. Time for another drink... Time to get on the plane.
