Dominus Obsequious Sororium is a sculptural meditation on power, corruption, and the insidious allure of devotion. At its core, the work draws from the NXIVM cult’s disturbing rituals, using symbolic forms and decaying matter to confront the viewer with a haunting visual allegory.

The piece features a pyramid of oranges, their once-vibrant surfaces marred by the seared imprint of a sigil—a brand inflicted upon female members of the cult. From certain angles, the scarring reveals the hidden initials of its leader, Keith Raniere, and actress Allison Mack, a high-ranking member. This dual-layered symbolism mirrors the cult’s deceptive facade: what appeared as self-empowerment concealed a sinister hierarchy of control and abuse.

The pyramid—a classical symbol of power and divine ascent—becomes corrupted in this context, its rigid form echoing the cult's tiered structure of dominance. The rotting fruit, flecked with mold, evokes the inevitable putrefaction of innocence within such a system. The once-lustrous oranges, symbolic of abundance and vitality, transform into vessels of decay, emblematic of the poisoned promises that ensnared NXIVM’s followers.

Moments Result

Monday is a slow burn of looking,looking, walking, dissassociating, other tasks, looking, looking, away time, bed time, loking, touching, looking looking, and thinking. Progress undocumented here because of cause... though some sense of cult practice toward studio '#2 Sacred Space' asthetic was part of the day. Bless TS.

Boundaries Between

After attaching the HG piece to its bottom box portion yesterday afternoon, I spent the evening affixing all the photographic cut stripes to the JP work. It was a relentless task, as working with these stripe elements always is. I did it standing—first the left side, then the right. Once they were all in place, I applied a clean, clear coat—no displacement issues at all.

The plexiglass box for the DOS piece arrived today. Even without any added detail, the DOS work looks even more impressive inside it. The way these collective objects are arranged within the box gives it a clinical, detached quality. I still need to add a base element to this piece, though.

Above Human

I added some minor wooden details to the JP work and filled in a few areas with putty where needed. The HG video box was painted black, and I also sanded and painted the AJ piece. That one got a kick-out plate carved for it last night. It’s set well and looks nice, though I still plan to add some support underneath it.

I trimmed down the HG framework’s overhanging pieces with my Dremel and painted its mare. The purple portraits need to be created this week and partially affixed. That will allow me to wrap up this portion of the work—it’ll be close to complete.

I’m planning to attach the framework to the master base using small disc magnets. But I’ll need to build a set of 24 tiny legs (or fewer) to do that. I think it’ll make the whole thing more manageable, more secure, and easier to disassemble or travel with.

Popular Science

I cut the photographic strips for the JP work. It took several hours, but it’ll be worth it. I had considered sculpting a face for this portion of the piece, but given the time and scope, I think I’ll explore that idea in a future work. When I bought those two vintage prints at the antique show last month, I already knew how I’d use them. They were overpriced—but they’ve made it to their intended destination.

The HG box fits the video cassettes nicely. I have a total of 20 to work with. I’ll finalize the number and material for them this week. Then I’ll need to re-dub and label each one. I also primed the box in preparation for a black coat of paint.

Double Up

Another hectic Friday grind completed. I knocked out some gallery tasks and then mostly focused on thoughtfully processing photos for the HG piece—and interacted with a few friendly strangers along the way. For HG, I’m still working across several old digital methods, mixing in some AI to push things in a direction I don’t fully control. In the end, I reworked some very low-res graphics in a weird, intentional way—some old-school pixel screwing—to arrive at a pixel ratio I could actually manipulate. Printing the final digital rendering at high resolution both matters and doesn’t. Balance.

As of this evening, the driving color scheme for HG is purple, black, and white. It’ll be interesting to see how this new outer element deconstructs the original black base layer—a layer I’ve lived with for 12 years or more. This will be an exciting finish. I’m most hesitant about this piece because, in order to move it forward, I have to bury a part of it I’ve lived with for so long. But this is the direction. I’m sure some solutions to the work’s current mathematical and symbolic challenges still need to emerge—but the process will help unfold those as it comes together.

I output an interesting process portion from HG and created a set of four prints. They form a 3x4 grid matrix. They're pretty compelling. I especially like the six-piece black cube in the final configuration. These are the first finished works for the show… that won’t be in the show.

Protection Theory

I woke up this morning knowing it would be a day of minor artistic accomplishment—and it was. I exited my bedroom and carried the scaffold portion of HG downstairs to join the rest of its current components. That same scaffold—or lattice—had spent the night in the room where I slept, perhaps absorbing something through the dark hours. The video cassette vessel for HG was in good shape this morning. I need to add the center break, cut and glue the backer panel onto the whole assembly, prime it, and eventually attach it to the master panel.

I also started looking into constructing or sourcing some wooden pedestals for at least two pieces in the show—DOS and MK. Ideally, they’d be no less than 42" x 12" x 12". As usual, time is the main issue.

I’ve been thinking about NACL. After adding the suffocation device from HG to it, I now plan to incorporate visual figures for AC and RM. These will serve as the main focal point, positioned along the top of the salt shelf. A new eight-part spindle top has been primed, and I’ve also added two side pinnacles to accompany the salt shelf. They already have a lovely powder blue color I’d like to keep—but I’ll see how it all feels as the piece comes together.

Using Blood

Today, I’m still at odds with the works for this show—though I did make some real, positive steps forward. I practiced marking on an object, and after feeling confident in the process, I scored a series of six objects three times over, carefully maintaining consistent proportions and depth. The six were a success.

By afternoon, I reflected on them and realized they shouldn’t remain a unit of six—but of ten. That shift extends the piece from a wall-mounted pyramidal form into something more truly multi-dimensional. The “pyramid scheme” feels more fitting with this direction, allowing me to build a structure that unites these marked objects. I may pull material from KR to form a base for the new construct—or I might leave it bare. Most likely, something from his early Amway marketing days will be repurposed. I’m also considering whether a volleyball might belong at the base. The current construct will definitely need its own plinth now, as it’s no longer just a wall piece. I plan to acquire a 10x10x10 acrylic cap for it, to give the whole work a kind of artificial antiquity. There’s still more work to be done on the objects themselves—to push them further toward a handmade sense of age and rot.

HG is also coming along well. In addition to the 40-part lattice I’m building for the front, along with the portraits, I began constructing a vessel to run along the bottom of the piece to house the VHS cassettes. With my personal collection now depleted, I’ve sourced 20 vintage Sci-Fi tapes that I’ll record over with HG “Initiation,” “The Last Call,” and “Exit Tapes.” I’m curious to watch them after I've done my manipulations.

The remaining space in the vessel—divided into two parts—will be used to store the (Last Supper items): the food (2), the liquid, and the drug.

The HG work—and the research it demands—is in a better place. Though I’ve read and outlined several books, I found that I needed more. Those sources focused too heavily on The Two rather than the full 39+1 (and others beyond them). I’ve struggled with creating portraits of individuals I know very little about. But based on the spreadsheets I’ve now compiled and cross-referenced, I’m in a position to illustrate them with purpose.

I have no intention of mocking the subjects I’m addressing in this upcoming show. But I do need to feel some genuine connection to them. I’ve watched countless hours of footage from MA, reviewed exit interviews from the group, and read personal statements from several members. Now, having compiled enough research—even down to knowing where these individuals are buried—I can say: I now feel comfortable representing them.

This evening, I also shifted direction on the MK handbags. It’s not that the means will change—but the NX/DOS concept is now being redirected into a different piece, one based on a master’s instruction to “practice.” I’ll begin that tomorrow.

The MK bag—or bags—will now lean more into ULTRA: into the ideas of bullshit marketing, annoying fonts, status, and manufactured hype. That concept will probably evolve, too. Not much time left, though.
